This past Saturday, I had a "Saturday Seminar". I hold Saturday seminars for the congregation on anything related to the Christian faith. It is an all day affair that includes lunch. We have studied Revelation, the Apostles' Creed, done a brief overview of the history of the Church, spiritual warfare, evangelism & outreach and the work and person of the Holy Spirit. We have even had guest speakers.  We hold it 7-8 times a year and we have been doin...

Wait Receive Go

Over the years there have been a number of times when I have asked someone to do something and they have said "no". When asked why they couldn't the usual response has been - "the Lord hasn't told me to do that." I find that response very annoying. So, I often say, if I asked you to help me move the couch, you would say no because the Lord didn't tell you to help me ? That is ludicrous ! But we often treat prayer the same way. There are a number people that I ha...

Proper Perspective

Over this past week I have read four books. All of the books were written by Frank Viola (Jesus Manifesto, From Eternity to Here, Beyond Evangelical, and Epic Jesus) and they were amazing and inspirational. Through these books I have been able to articulate what I have been seeing and sensing as I have been reading scripture and spending time with Jesus. And then I began to read another book by Frank Viola and George Barna called Pagan Christianity. It is an exa...

Out smart the devil

In 2 Corinthians 2:11, in the New Living Translation, it indicates that we need to be on the watch so that the devil doesn't out smart us and that we need to become familiar with his evil schemes. The key to Spiritual Warfare is prayer that is proactive. The enemy's favorite tactic is retaliation and pushbacks. Recently, I have had a conversation with someone about a direct pushback from the enemy against the family. This pushback was very intense. This seemed t...

Praying Together

This past Sunday I preached on John 15:1-8, that well known text where Jesus says that "I am the vine and you are the branches. Those who remain in me, and I in them, will produce much fruit." The word "abide" means to "live" in Christ by being connected to him and staying close to him. It is very clear that "abiding" has a lot to do with our prayer lives. Typically we apply this with the fruit of the Spirit in Galatians 5:22-23, that as we remain in Jesus (the ...

Obstacle to Prayer (3)

Posted on April 27, 2012 at 12:55 AM Comments comments (4)

Over the last number of years the Church (general)) has been caught up in what has been dubbed  the concept of becoming more "seeker sensitive". Essentially the whole concept can be boiled down to this basic principle - remove all the barriers so that a large group of people can be gathered and then begin to disciple them. As a result of this approach of doing Church many mega Churches have sprung up across the country.  Without sounding too critical, ...

Obstacle to Prayer (2)

Posted on April 26, 2012 at 12:10 AM Comments comments (2)

This is part two on "Obstacles to Prayer". This is a series blogs examining why it is so difficult to establish prayer priorities in the congregation. The primary assertion of this blog is that there is a misunderstanding about the nature of prayer. Too many people in the Church have the understanding that prayer is about getting stuff. Because of the misapplied verse of ASK-SEEK-KNOCK  (Luke 11:9) and the name it and claim it Gospel preachers, prayer has b...
